  • Building on the discourse of translation studies which stand at a beginning stage, the present research aims to analyze the existing translation phenomena by comparatively analyzing the Korean-English source language texts (SLT) and target language texts (TLT), and finding out factors which cause the fluctuation of the number of words in translation texts.
First of all, this study uses parallel corpus, one of the methods of the corpus linguistics, to study the factors of the increase and decrease of words in Korean/English text translation. Two factors are identified based on the corpus study of Korean source language text, English target language text, English source language text and Korean target language text.
First, the differences in forms and syntactic structures of Korean and English are contributed to the difference of word number in source and target texts. Korean, an agglutinating language, has particles and suffixes. Korean is characterized by these morphemes, which do not stand alone. Particles are always added to uninflected words whereas suffixes to inflected words.
By comparison, English makes inflection of words to indicate grammatical relations instead of particular morphemes like Korean. The inflections of nouns, singular and plural forms, and verb inflections are the characteristics of this inflective language. Specifically, Korean does not have in number difference between English and Korean a determining factor, hction words including A Study on the Translation Difference of Word Numbers in Korean/English Texts through Parallel Corpus Choi Jeong-a (Seowon University) Building on the discourse of translation studies which stand at a beginning stage, the present research aims to analyze the existing translation phenomena by comparatively analyzing the Korean-English source language texts (SLT) and target language texts (TLT), and finding out factors which cause the fluctuation of the number of words in translation texts. Specifically, Korean does not have in number difference between English and Korean a determining factor, hction words including preposition, defrnte and indefinite articles, personal pronouns, conjunction and relatives, which is translated into the difference of word numbs between the two languages.
The second factor is the translator's approach. The differences of word numbers partly depend on whether the translator chooses translation "faithful to the source language text" or "natural for the target language text." The difference of word numbers caused by different translation approaches are, in fact, due to the different categorization of personal pronouns in each language. In other words, the Korean personal pronouns, which fall into the grammatical category, are used practically as the lexical category, and thus often omitted depending on the relationship between the speaker and listener or the situation. In English, personal pronouns are not to be omitted because they belong to the grammatical category. Therefore, the personal pronouns are the contributing factors for the change of word numbers in SLT and TLT, which is closely related with the translator's approach.
The word count difference between Korean and English texts, examined in this study through the translation phenomena, may set a good example in the approach of the corpus linguistics and toward the fledging Korean translation studies.
