THE LEXICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS IN CHINA:A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF NEW STANDARD ENGLISH

This study, after analyzing the vocabulary in New Standard English, empirically demonstrate that both the total vocabulary in the textbook and the words to be learned by students are in general within the scope of English Curriculum Standard. However, problematic issues are also found concerning students’ vocabulary learning load, selection of words, repetition and range of word occurrence, and coverage of learned words in supplementary reading passages. Solutions of these problems may include adaptation of learning requirements of each stage, adding high-frequency words, providing more repeated opportunities of words and rewriting or replacing the supplementary passages.
